Hi everyone! I've purchased the fittings to make a drain in my pool like so many others have done..but I'm not sure how to know at what height should the drain be? I know I need to fill the pool first, before cutting the hole right? I plan on using a drill to make the hole. how big should i make the hole in relation to the fittings? thanks!

If i were you, I would put it as low to the bottim as poassible so you can drain most of the water and then tip it over and rinse it out without breaking your back. Or depending on the type of drain. I would put it on the very bottom so you can rinse it out qithout tipping it over

That is right. You are trying to be as low as possible. The only thing is that the pools will pull down with water weight. So fill it. Take the fitting, hold it to the spot and draw a line around it with a sharpee pen. Then you draw another hole inside of it with the pen and the treaded end. You basically want to be as tight as you can be, almost having to screw the fitting in. Forget the hole drill, it is to fast and will rip a hole into the side. Best is to use an exacto or utility knife and slowly cut along. It does cut like butter, really that easy.

You want it as close to the bottom as you can get and still work your fixture.
I used a dremel with a cutting bit to cut my hole.

Thanks everyone.

my only worry about using a utility knife, is that is what i used to cut holes in the top of 5 gallon buckets, and yikes, i couldn't even get close to a circle lol...and ended up rippin open more than i needed. Maybe knife was just not sharp enough?
By Dremel, do you mean a drill?

Dremel is a rotary tool. Kind of like a drill, but with different bits that can do a cutting job really nice. You can do a practice cut with the utility knife, by cutting a really small hole first. I used a very small utility knife and it worked out nicely. Yes a sharp blade will help.

The kiddie pool will be much much easier to cut than a 5 gallon bucket. If you have a drill and you don't have a dremel you can drill a series of holes just inside the circle you've drawn and then use the knife to cut between the holes. If you want to cut free-hand with a knife its nice to have some plywood behind the pool instead of just dirt, gives you something to press into to steady the blade.

That's for sure the plastic is really soft compared to a 5 gallon bucket. I had mine standing on the side and did small 1/8 inch cuts going along the drawn line. I just went forwards and backwards like you would with a bread knife. No wooden block behind it at all.

we got a hole saw bit its about $2-10 and they cut a hole like in your doors for door knobs on your house etc. they make them in different sizes, and for plastic, steel, or wood and they cut the perfect hole with you cordless drill.

We use a kiddie pool for our Sophie too. Can someone start at the beginning of this discussion and tell me about the drain in the pool. I would love to find a better way to drain our pool than dipping out with a 5 gal bucket. I am wondering about the process. Thanks!
