I couldn't take the rooster activity! I have a very small flock that I hatched, and have 2 roos, and only 3 hens.....Roos now have their own bachelor pad because I separated them! They crowed non-stop at first, but the hens are so happy!!! My poor hens were getting so sick of being constantly assaulted (which was only for a day or two when they first became sexually active before I separated them) that I couldn't even pet them anymore, and they were losing weight b/c they refused to get off the roosting pole all day b/c of those darned roos! Now that they live separately, all my chickens and roos are friendlier, more relaxed, and things are just generally calmer and quieter. I know it's a natural occurrence and all that, but I found that being around chicken sex, just wasn't for me! I mean, it was every 5 mins, all day/every day!!
My chicken house, consequently, has become very pro-hen, pro-hen rights, and sorry to say, while I love my 2 roos, they just aren't top priority around here with their ......needs. If I could find a big ol farm with loads of hens, I would definitely send these boys off to live there..... The other advantage....my hen house is now SO CLEAN! Those girls don't emit the urine odors that those boys do! bleh. It's all about the GIRLS here.
