Atccking hawk just got attacked!

I'm starting to see blue jays around here for a change - how do I cultivate a flock of them to hang out?

First, you throw peanuts (in the shell) out onto the deck so they make noise when they land. Blue jays come and carry them off, one by one. Soon they learn to come when they hear the sound of the peanuts, and the guy that discovers them first calls to all his friends that the peanuts are here. Then when you forget to put out the peanuts, they perch outside your glass door and stare at you while you have your morning cup of tea.

Hawks go after what is abundant and on their shopping list, the items that are abundant change with the seasons.

They will prey on mice, other small rodents, small birds (they don't have to be ground running), and the young of larger birds.

If mice are plentiful they will usually leave birds alone.

What you are seeing or hearing about here desertdarlene is a collection of things that have happened to folks that raise birds but what you may not realize is that these incidents occurred over a rather large area.

Your experiences are confined to a smaller area.

It is like people who hunt deer, they can go for years and not get one and see very few, and then they not only get one but see dozens.

Bet I end up with squirrels, but I'll give it a shot. The one jay I have seen was guarding my live oak tree from a squirrel, I guess they like acorns too.

Smear peanut butter on several victor rat traps use something to hold the traps from being moved, set them, check regularly. Remove any deceased squirrels, reset and repeat.

a bb gun wouldn't catch anything I didn't want to hit, right? (that is my current squirrel deterrent from the bird feeder) I haven't hit him yet, but the squirrel is learning the sound of me pumping up the pellet gun.
