Ate all the grit

Sorry, I read your post so fast that I didn't realize you had posted the age of your chicks. I saw that you had gotten guineas and was wondering if you would be selling some in the future. I had hatched out a dozen guinea eggs and only 3 made it. Out of those three, two them died, the one that lived is a male. Then we ended up with another male guinea, it just showed up one day. We have no idea where it came from. So we started looking for keets, but they were 1 to 3 hours away. To us it wasn't worth the drive. I also had noticed that you live in Blackstock which is only a half hour from where we live.

Also, everything I had read online said that I didn't need to feed baby chicks grit. And I was wondering if it didn't matter what age or food you feed them you can give them grit. That was why I had asked how old your baby chicks are.

As for the grit, I understand that some chick starter has grit in the mix so you wouldn't need any till you move them to regular feed. I haven't looked but depending on what your feeding there might be grit in the regular feed too. I am feeding a totally organic non-soy, non-GMO feed produced by New Country Organics. It has no grit so I have to supplement. It also bothers me paying feed prices for grit that's in the mix. But, check your feed mix, both chicks and guineas need grit.

As for my chicks and guineas they are 7 weeks today. The grit consumption is now what I would consider normal. I have placed a much larger pan of the grit out and they are no longer eating it all. I suspect that I wasn't salting their feed with quite enough and were playing catch up. Thanks to all the folks who responded.

Sorry I haven't replied, I have been away. Thank you for letting me know about selling the guineas and what you feed your birds. We do feed our chicks start n grow 24% and the feed does have grit in it. Thank you for the information.
