Mythology is everywhere. Everyone has their own version of a single diety. Unless you’re Indian, then you have thousands and thousands of gods (which means that there is a whole entire country of people ending up in hell). The uncivilized prrson may actually have a far better understanding of God (IMO) than the person with a generations-long history of so-called Christianity. When missionaries enter areas that have been previously unentered, it is not unusual for them to discover that the indigent peoples already have a clear understanding that there is one Deity, that He is the Creator, that He wants them to live clean, moral lives in harmony with one another, etc. They know this through dreams and visions. God can raise up prophets anywhere among any people. God is not limited to work only through certain groups of people, i.e., European-American Judeo-Christian Protestant evangelicals.
Yes! A lot of people are terrified to even think these things. I was literally taught that doubt created a direct portal into your brain for the devil to come and take over.... if you embrace thinking for yourself, you’ll end up tricked by the devil and possibly a terrible stinkin’ atheist that will end up in hell. I completely get it. I now embrace intelligence and I question EVERYTHING.I've always wondered the same thing about the religious perspective. Where did God come from? Why is it any more believable that a God came from nowhere and then created earth (in seven days)? How do believers explain the many different creation stories from other religious cultures?
I came from a very religious family and went to Catholic school, attended bible study and prayer meetings, and even taught Sunday school for a few years. Around the age of 13, I began to question the beliefs I had been indoctrinated with. I decided I didn't believe in god, but I felt ashamed & guilty about it. I kept my thoughts a secret, since there was really no one I could talk to about such things. Then I went to college and one of my favorite professors mentioned that he was atheist. He said it with such ease and confidence that it blew my mind. I'm sure he had no idea how significant and needed his words were to me. It literally released me of my guilt and allowed me to finally feel okay for not believing in something that makes no logical sense to me. I have never since questioned or felt ashamed of my personal beliefs.
