When breeding to the SOP you need to remember that judges do interpret things in their own way and also go by what looks good.

The ameraucana standard calls for the bird to have a medium back and tail set at 45 degrees at the horizontal. Well, most judges don't like the appearance this gives and will choose a bird with a shorter back to place because "it flows better".

But, always breed to standard! Judges come and go.

Another reason I will never show. I dealt with that too much in the dog ring. I am doing this now for myself and do not need someone else to tell me how they would like it. I am just going to follow the SOP and not worry about what the show people want since I am doing it for heritage only. Showing can get way too picky and critcal and take all the fun out of breeding.​
