Attaching hardware cloth

As people have already stated, screws and washers work great. If you are on a budget or run out of washers like I did earlier today you can cut and drill some 1"x material and make your own washers. I ripped a cedar fence and finished the process of attaching the hardware cloth with home made washers. Good luck.

this is the progress made today, I built the frame. and hardware clothed 2 sides. Jeez is it ever cold outside, was supposed to get up to 45, but now I see high of 39. It was snowing here this morning. Barely warm enough for it to melt.
I worked on the run for about 7 hours, my 12 year old helped the best he could.
I ran out of hardware cloth and wood so I am done for the day but this is what I got done. Decided to cover 3/4 of the runs roof with metal roofing. The hardware cloth is 1/4 inch and i have it buried all around the run . I will have an extended summer run made out of plain garden fencing for when I am home.

After much frustration with trying to nail U staples overhead in my soffets, and being able to pull out hardware cloth that had been installed with a staple gun
with my hand, I read on here somewhere to try lath screws. This is the only way to go.
You can get a package of 200 Tek #8 3/4" lath screws at the Home Depot for less than $6.00. I don't believe there is a predator out there (well, within reason),
that can pull a 3/4" screw out of wood.
With a screw gun installation is a snap.

I used 1" wooden lathes nailed to hold the hardware cloth to the coop/posts edging. To connect ends of fencing together, I used wire woven thru the overlapped ends. I have also occasionally used the cut ends bent over the next piece, but that is a PITA to do.

I use roofing nails with the metal discs on them.
