My Cottage
Hello everyone! Cackleberry Cottage has made it through it's first winter pretty well. Will have a few tweeks to do, but nothing major. Now comes the summer. Our run is a metal carport that we enclosed with 1/2" hardware cloth. We are going to need to put up some shade cloth for the summer and I am wondering what the best way to attach it would be? I will probably buy the ones on Amazon that already have the grommets on the edges.

Will those little bungies they sell to go with them fit through the hardware cloth? Come winter we will swap it out for the clear plastic tarps. I also want it to look neat and tidy as our coop sits at the front of our property. I would love to hear how you put up your shade cloth!

I use little bungees, if the hooks don't fit thru the holes in the grommets, fold the bungee cord in half, stick a loop of it thru and then the 2 hooks thru the loop. Problem solved! btw, those mini bungees hold up amazingly, thru fierce winds, etc., and some have been there 2 yrs.
I bought 70% shade cloth on Ebay, It came in a length longer than I needed, with a pack of snap on yourself plastic grommets. i cut it into pieces and put the grommets on myself. I can't believe how tough this stuff is. We've had 60 mph winds.

Howdy! I've used all kinds of things depending on the temporariness-vs-permanence of what I'm doing. Bungee cords, quick links, cheap 2" aluminum carabiners, paracord (550 cord), small static climbing rope (3mm or 4mm), and zip ties. I've used them all to hold up various tarps and barriers around our run.

These zip ties are are "releasable" and reusable, and tough too! I had them holding up an ill-fated snow fence last winter. I'm quite happy with them:

How windy is it where you're at? It can get really quite windy where I'm at so I have to be careful when hanging things like that. My favorite chicken shade material is burlap - it allows the wind to blow through itself somewhat; so it holds up well in spite of being a loose weave material. But it would be hard to find a piece of burlap big enough for a car port wall! :)

Thank you! I used zip ties to put up some plastic, but they don't release and they are proving hard to remove. I am going to have to take a box cutter to them I suppose. Also they were kind of hard to put on but I could deal with that if I didn't have to try to cut them off.

It is good to know that the bungies hold up. We don't have a lot of wind but we do get Santa Ana winds which can be quite strong when they come through.

Shade cloth lets wind and rain thru. I prefer using bungees for give and take in strong winds.

WOW! reusable zip ties!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I know, right?! Thankfully our local recycling center takes old cut up zip ties. But that's still just burning money, if not environmental resources.

So I just got sick of it one day, looked for reusable ones and BAM... there they were on Amazon :)
