The quacking fury will be unleashed in a week or so...as soon as the corn gets higher and I protect the green beans.

So today I was going to move the ducks water pan because they've made a mud pit out of its former location. Something in my head told me there was a snake near the hose. Sure enough, a ginormous garter snake, like 20 inches long, edged over as I dumped out the pan. As I filled it with water, he moseyed toward the gate to the duck run.

Then he went up the step.

Then he turned and lashed out at me.

I was trying to go past him to put the pan in the pen, and he kept striking. Talk about a Napoleon complex!

I chased him off the step and into the run and put the pan down, but I used a very long stick because those suckers are just too dangerous.

After braving the vile serpent, the ducks rewarded me by drinking out of the mud puddle.

So, no. Ducks don't chase garter snakes.

I love reading this!! I know I shouldnt laugh but you have such a great way of putting things! I can truly "see" what you are saying.
My mom is terrified of snakes. One time she was mowing and started to go over a snake (the blade hadnt hit it yet). She screamed and ran into the house, leaving the mower running...us kids were like "what the heck?????" But my dad used to chase her with them so I am sure that didnt help...
Now I WOULD be a bit wimpy about spiders.(Though not so much now since when my sons had tarantulas as pets I often was the one taking care of them.)
Babies?????? Like you say, no wonder she was worked up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey everybody...not a continuation of the last post, but I wanted to warn you all. I went outside a couple of nights ago (around 10:00) to do a walkabout of the chicken coops, run, etc. I was about to pass a fenced flower garden area when I heard some scratching. I looked up and right beside the fence, but on the inside of the enclosure was a possum climbing up a pine tree. I thought it was the same possum I encountered a couple of weeks ago beside the chicken run, but probably not, as this one ended up being smaller. By the time I alerted my X to come outside and bring his gun, it was 30' up. I shone the flashlight in his gold eyes and he just sat there until my X came out and blew him out of the tree. I felt sad, but told God I was sorry to have Stevie kill the O'Possum, but it was either the O'Possum or my chickens. I never knew they would climb so high, and now I know it would be an easy feat for them to climb up on top of the henhouse and pen- and probably loosen the chicken wire enough to fall through. Just trying to keep someone from losing their chickens.
