Now OhioGirl THAT is a good one. I can't even imagine what dh said after you found that chicken and he spent $300.00. But I would have done the same thing.
actually i have a really really good husband and he did not say a WORD about the whole thing.
and as it turns out their dogs are still coming over anyway so even tho the entire henyard is now securely fenced we are doing more around the rest of our property. we've trained our brontosaurused sized german shepherds to walk the property line but we're taking no chances.
we have a bunch of babies right now and yes i still use SMALLER buckets for the hens so this way they'd only get it stuck on their heads like little tiny lampshades
I can't tell you how much I enjoyed this thread! I just sat and read the whole thing! I am glad there was a happy ending, Crock Pot gets to stay and the bucket has been tried and sentenced! Now, if you will excuse me I need to go outside and check on the chickens and I will be on the look out for those darn evil buckets......
Believe me if I had not experienced it, I would never have believed it.
If nothing else, I did like Crockpot the Evil Rooster more after that day. He was so upset about his lady being missing. If I put her away first, she makes the most horrible sounds in there by herself. Calling her man. If he is being difficult (not wanting to come to the night shed), I will prop the door open so he can hear her and he always comes running.
I think I need a BEWARE OF ANGRY ROOSTER sign on my gate when they are out in the yard. I want one that says:
BEWARE OF ANGRY ROOSTER
(watch out for the buckets too)
I'm reading it thinking of the empty bucket I have out by the barn. Maybe I should rein that one in tomorrow
On a more serious note though. Having a people aggressive rooster and a non-people aggressive rooster does not mean you have a good protector and a bad one. I will concede that the people aggressive roo is probably going to protect his girls well, but at what price to you? I have a Wyandotte rooster named Thunder who wouldn't raise a feather at me but he herds his girls away from me and the dog and the evil invading 11 week old chicks. Always putting himself between the girls and danger. I very rarely see him basking in the dirt with the girls. Usually they are all in their pits and he is standing guard. He also breaks up hen fights if he thinks one of his girls is going to hurt another. When it comes to myself and other people he is not friendly but he doesn't even think of attacking, he just moves his girls away from the situation. I completely trust Thunder when I am around and I also completely believe that, should anything ever come after my chickens, he will be on the front line, toe to toe with the enemy. He calls the girls to the coop every night, since in the evening they like to spread and linger in various places, he knows when his 9 girls are in and will not stop crowing until all are present and accounted for. If I hear him crowing at a strange hour of the night, it's usually because something went past the coop window and he is warning it to stay away from his ladies.
It is very sweet that your pullet and cockerel are bonded together but don't let that force you to keep a people aggressive rooster. There are many sweet roosters that would lay down their lives for their girls! (and not hurt you or your family)
buckets? dusting bins?? OIL PANS??? and i thought weasels were bad! now that i think of it, the broom has been giving me the evil-eye. and... and the pitchfork and the rake and the roll of chicken wire??
be afraid, be very afraid. should i relocate or shoot on sight? if i were to relocate rogue buckets in my yard, is there a bucket preserve to send them in so that they don't have to die and live free bucket lives!
oh jeez, all this bucket talk makes me think of BucketHead (buckets + chickens = BucketHead). he was raised in a chicken coop and refuses to record his music unless he is inside a chicken coop. that's where he spent his time learning how to play guitar. amazing guitarist if you ask me! odd fellow... maybe he will take our problematic rogue buckets. keep them away from our chickens!
