Attack of the Killer eggs!

Quote: Another method some people swear by is only setting fat, round egg and not the thinner, pointy ones, to ensure more female chicks. I've hatched many a male chicks out of "fat" eggs! Unfortunately there is no way to guarantee more or only female chicks.

I tried that as well. They were so fat that I couldn't even tell which was the pointy end. I just guessed when setting them. I set 4 of them and all 4 were roosters. lol. That's my luck.

Oh my goodness, did you set out to prove that theory wrong? LOL You're almost as bad as my MIL. She managed to hatch 7 males from 8 eggs once.

Over two thousand years ago one of the Greek philosophers, can’t remember which one, got into the debate about whether pointy eggs hatched roosters or hens. That kind of stuff has been around that long. Of course he said pointy eggs hatched pullets while round eggs hatch cockerels. That’s opposite of current “knowledge” but just as reliable. It’s all 50-50 in my opinion. I don’t believe any of it.

Why would those small pullet eggs hatch pullets while a mature hen’s larger eggs hatch cockerels? Shannon, maybe that’s a question for your Granny, but be ready to duck when you ask her if she is as spirited as my Granny was.

That one case I was talking about earlier, a hen flew up ten feet to a very small landing spot to make her nest. There was no other realistic way for her to get there. Most of the hidden nests I found were either on the ground or in the hay loft at floor level. Most, not all.

Occasionally a hen would successfully hide a nest up in that 10’ high hay loft and hatch some chicks. That’s when I learned that a chick can jump to the ground from 10’ high, jump up, and run to Mama. That kind of experience made me a lot more relaxed about how tough those baby chicks really are.

i went to a swap last yr. that was selling pea fowl and one booth had sexed babies, so of course every one wanted them. out of curiosity i went to take a look and he pulls out this fishing weight on a string and starts waving over the fowl. i busted out laughing and got some rather dirty looks as i moved on down the line.

It might seem funny but my granny predicted every 72 out of 73 grandchildren accurately using that method. That last one didn't count because it was a surprise twin.
