seriously though... I had 2 roosters on my last farm. One was a bantum cochin and I just loved him to death. The other I'm not so sure what he was but I was mean to him... He never had a chance to be mean to anything. He made a pass at mounting my favorite two hens and man i was after him right quick. He did take over alpha rooster when my bantum disappeared for a week though, and then he was mean to the bantum... not anyone else. I bullied them enough to where they knew that I was da boss. The bantum rooster was held anytime he got too close to me. the other rooster I'd try to pick him up just to tick him off and mess with him.

Point though.. I never had a "mean rooster." But if I did I would definetely cull his feathery butt because I don't want the hassle. I want my visitors safe, my kids safe, my wife safe and my unsuspecting back to be safe.

I'd have to say it's how much you're willing to deal with. Personally, I think I would cull right away because I don't want the hassle, injury to anyone and stress of a mean roo in my backyard.I'm currently waiting to see how my 4 RIR roos behave to see if anyone stays or not.I do love them too...but think if they got mean....I wouldn't. It's just not "fun" I wouldn't think to have to constantly watch your back...and the kids...and the dogs....and the cats...and company...etc.I hope they stay well-behaved as I'd like to keep 3 of them but we'll see.
Good luck with yours in whatever you decide to do...I hope I don't get into the same mess but .....

We have 3 more roosters besides him, and they are all very well behaved and they don't mess around with me like he does. I thought he would be trained well. When he was little, I handeled him well, and he was very calm.

Like I metioned earlier, there is just something about that rooster that I don't want to let go. I don't think I am going to put him down, but I hate having to constantly watch my back and make sure he is not coming after me.

Here I was just yesterday posting on another thread how nice my RIR roo is, then today he attacked me and my husband.

He's been held plenty and we feed him and the hens from our hands at least once a day. No problem. This morning when I got in the coop to refill the water, they all just watched me and everyone was calm. Then when I was sprinkling some scratch out in the pen, Pip came at me and bit me. I can see 4 bruises where he got me with his beak; he has no spurs yet. When my husband came home, the same thing happened but he managed to pick Pip up and hold him until he'd calmed down. This afternoon when we brought out some kitchen scraps and BOSS, he was fine, though not as friendly as usual. We love that stupid bird! Why would he suddenly be attacking us? He is rather ... energetic ... in the mornings and none of the hens are interested yet. Has anyone had a roo that attacked like that and ended up being friendly again, or is this just how he's going to be now that he's older? This is our first flock and up until now, they've all seemed happy and Pip was the friendliest of them all.
