I am, and thank you. Would you have a suggestion on which brand of spray on antiseptic works best? It would be a lot easier than having to put on a cream.

I use Acceleryn antiseptic spray.

Veterciyn spray is another good one if you have a place to buy it. I hope he makes a full recovery.

Thank you both--I'll check those out in a minute and then I'll check to see if either of the two feed stores near us has either kind in store. Just got in from setting up a makeshift coop for him and I need shower, lol.

Coming back to update on the duck, the wound on his back is a lot better now that I have looked at the pictures I took when he first got them, but now it is mostly one black scab that hasn't really changed since. His tail is the same, just one main scab (black colored as well) that hasn't really changed.

Firefly (the duck) is fine and healthy as normal, though I have noticed with his back that after not putting on the antiseptic spray for I think it was two days, you could really smell it without having to get too close to the wound. It isn't a strong smell, and the wound hasn't gotten worse, (as far as I can see) and when I put more antiseptic on the smell went down. I didn't put it on yesterday, and I noticed the smell was back today. I don't know if that should be worrying or not.

As far as I know, his tail doesn't have the same problem. On his neck it appeared that just a patch of feathers was pulled out, but is totally covered by other feathers, and the former puncture wound I mentioned turned out to be just one or two broken and bloody pin feathers, since I searched and searched and found no wound. The one on his wing is just missing feathers.

I'll keep putting on antiseptic...Though I came back to ask if there was a type of cream or topical solution that you guys could recommend if you think that would help him heal faster.

Thank you. I'll see if I can get pictures (at least of his back)...though he's in a nippy mood right now and it's hard to get them by myself without getting bitten.

I'd like to see a picture of what your talking about I don't think there should be a smell unless there is infection. I'd like for @casportpony to have a look and read what you wrote about the wound. I think you should wrap him in a towel so you can really examine that wound for pus you might have to remove the scab. Don't do anything yet though but get some pics.

Does it smell like a dead animal? If it does smell like a dead animal let me know and I will help you come up with a plan.

Thank goodness for treats...he calmed down enough to let me look. Sorry the picture are so bad. It's hard because the feathers have grown, especially the down, and cover most of the scab. I pulled away as many as I dared, but after snapping one pic he squirmed away.

As for the smell, I'd say it doesn't smell as potent or as bad as a dead animal, but along the lines of the same scent. It was stronger the other day when I first started to smell it before I pulled away the feathers or got close, this was after the time that I didn't put the antiseptic on for about two days. Earlier today I smelled it without getting close or pulling away the feathers, but now that I'm smelling it again it is a lot weaker unless I lean in closer.

In this first picture, the blue circle shows the scab. The red circle shows where I can feel something hard, probably more of the scab, but it's underneath down feathers.

Everything you see is hard and dried, nothing is oozing or wet.

This is where I pulled back some of the down to see more of the scab under the feathers circled in red above.

Don’t have any advice but maybe a word of encouragement... I’ve had a lot of animal attacks over the years and although I’ve not had any chickens recover, I had 2 ducks that were attacked by a dog and it took about 3 weeks for them to recover but they are full blown now. Ducks are tough birds

I fear that maybe the sound wasn't cleaned enough when it happened. Without proper cleaning, one is just applying sprays and ointment to poop and dirt, not to healthy tissue.

If it has a smell it could be infected, and infections like this can be life threatening.
