My roo that is occasionally being aggressive is uncertain where his territory is now that the garden fence is down for the winter. He has much more area to range in and I think it keeps him a little more edgy. He is not consistently aggressive, and more so when strangers are around his girls. And, of course, he pecked a lady I don't like, so he's on my good list for THAT. Meeting his attack with aggression (kicking, prodding, etc.) makes him more determined...I use my "I'll peck you back, or I'll peck you first" strategy, which consists of my showing him that I will tap him between the shoulder blades with my finger if he tries it, and he normally backs up.
On the other hand, I rehomed a habitually aggressive roo the other day...got back the report that his new flock ostracized him and chased him into the WOODS because he wasn't behaving. His new owner has no qualms about getting out the stewpot when he's tired of dealing with roosterisms, along with the report that since people are "rescuing" him from the flock, they are getting more respect.
