Ironically I got some orpington hatching eggs to try and get a broody chicken one day to raise chicks for me and then 2 days before hatch one of my adult hens decides to go broody! I got up at 5 today to see if she would adopt the chicks. I didn't expect her to and she didn't. But she wasn't completely viscous. She pecked them enough to keep them away. I'm not sure if it's because she's only been broody about 5 days or because I waited to long into the night and used a bright light. I put the chicks under her and took the eggs with a headlamp. She got up to eat and drink right away and the rooster started crowing. She ate and drank for quite a while leaving the chicks alone except for when they got too close to her. Then she walked around the entire coop a couple times looking for her eggs and clucking. She would do her broody growl at the chicks but no motherly clucking.
Any chance I can successfully try again tonight with a dull light more in the middle of the night or shoups I just break her broodiness?
