Attention Muscovy lovers

Here are the pics I promised from my last post. Do you think it's a male? It's just so hard because so many things indicate male but then it is small like a female. So confused!

I am glad you have already had success with your eggs! Thanks for the helpful info, I really appreciate it! Since my muscovy is only 7 months I am thinking I just need to wait. But he/she is developing larger caruncles each day. She/he also has been putting its mohawk up a lot more when alarmed as well. Since large caruncles and mohawks tend to be male traits, I am starting to think I don't have a female

. Do you know if females can also exhibit these traits? I will post a few more pictures to see if anyone can confirm my suspicion.

Thanks again!

Sounds like you may have a drake.

Mohawks are not a sexual trait, females raise theirs too and facial fleshing varied while yes, males usually have more females vary... i have enough of them hear to see it.

The pics, don't look like a male.. not big enough, head has a feminine shape... that said pics are deceptive, what kind of vocals can you get from this bird, while females do hiss they have way beyond that whereas male simply don't.. they hiss/huff and that is all past baby staging.

Here is my Lilac she is quite heavy fleshed, a few years old and most definitely female.

Thanks for the great info! It's good to know that muscovy females can have large caruncles as well. Lilac is a very pretty lady! My muscovy is rather small (you can judge the size by comparing to my indian runner in the pic above), so female seems possible. However, he/she also doesn't make any female sounds that I have heard. He/she has "hissed" before, but really rarely makes any noises at all. I know females can also hiss, so I still don't know what to think. The father duck was absolutely huge, so it is hard for me to believe that mine is a male, unless it was the runt or something.

Hmmm, my 13 year old who is very good with our poultry says it looks like a female, his old man is holding on to it being a drake. Going Quakers and my son may well be right and I might be mistaken. So, don't give up it being a female...............

Maybe you should just vent sex it?!

I attempted vent sexing today and it was inconclusive. I haven't done it much, so I am no expert. No obvious penis was present, but I don't know if I just missed it. Sometimes it takes awhile for the penis to extrude and I feel that I may not have allowed enough time to be sure. I may try again in a few days. My muscovy was very well behaved and didn't mind much, but I think he/she will enjoy a few days before I try again. At this point, my female hopes are still possible!
