ATTENTION SILKIE owners!! some quick questions

Is your run covered? If so then I would count it as part of the coop, that's just me though. I wouldn't get a WHOLE lot of chickens cause they will want to sleep in their coop. My coop is open(just wire) and has a roof on it. They sleep on a HUGE "brooder box" type thing.

im confused, if a cover it and count it as part of the coop, then they have no run. are you saying that if a cover the run then i will be able to fit more chickens in it???

Ok, so the coop is the indoor and do about 3 sq feet per bird in that. For the run, that is where they get fresh air, bugs to scratch in, and grass and stuff. Try to keep that to about 10 sq feet per standard size bird so that they have ample get away from each other room.

You want to cover it so hawks don't attack and eat your pets. If it is not walled in and draft free, I generally don't count it as coop space, but run space.

Zzguy.............disregard the first line in PurpleChicken's post.........They are not evil, the few I have are the most calm and friendly birds I have.

Them more room you have for them the better off they will be. Over crowding will present problems of its own. I have runs for three to four silkies by color and I wouldn't want them any smaller than what I have them which is a total of 8X6. I have them covered and a little three sided house for roosting and laying and gettting out of the wind and rain.
