ATTN: American Pit Bull owners.

My mom doesn't like to tell people our's is a pitbull. I do hate what the name implies too, but I think it is important to use the name for now just to show people that "pitbulls" are not vicious. I still can't believe there is a person in the world that doesn't realize that it is the type of person (if you even want to call them that

) that is attracted to the breed that is cruel. Not the breed itself. This is our second dog we have saved that was BRED to fight. Not one problem with either one. I have to tell you, Champ drives me and our other dogs crazy because he is always trying to lick us to death or get us to play

Hi,

You know, you could still contact your local pit bull rescue group - it's not only adults who need rescuing! HOWEVER, you should be certain that any pit bull you get does not come from lines used for fighting, especially if you get it from a rescue group. The instinct to be dog aggressive is very strong in the fighting lines, and you can't train that instinct out of the dog. Teach him to control it, yes, get rid of it, no. I would think that you want a dog you can take places and do things with, a true ambassador for the breed. I suggest you go to the AKC (American Kennel Club) website. Click on breeds, go to American Pit Bull, and there you will find the breed clubs and rescue groups. You might have to go to one of the local breed clubs to find a local rescue. You would also have the opportunity to make contact with lots of breeders, and anyone breeding for the show ring is not breeding for fighting instinct!

You should also go to Infodog, which is a website that lists all the dog shows, by state or by date, and it also lists working dog events - obedience, agility, tracking, etc.

I agree that your pup should go to some kind of classes early on, and that you should do some team-oriented activities right from the start. Agility, flyball, tracking, rally obedience, therapy dog, etc.

Take the pup everywhere with you and teach it how to behave in all situations. Above all, have fun!!!

Good luck.

i have raised game breed APBT for many many years , one thing is i have never been biten , the facts is if you get a true game breed dog they will have ALL the human aggresion bred out of them , there sad past maes them a VERY good pet now for single pet homes , they will not do good with ANY other pets, they do how ever want to please there owners and love them more then anything , you will never find another dog that is more virsatile , loving, loyal ,,
my story of my first Game breed Pit bull,,,many many years ago i abtained my first pit from a old breeder in the NC moutians , he was a jeep/homer bred dog , and to tell you the truth i was kinda scard of him a little, but he was buityfull one day i was out in the woodline working on cutting down some small trees , im bent down on my knees sawing away , all so a sudden that dog comes barreling @ me grawing and barking , (OMG he has broaking his chain and is going to atack me) ,, right as he is about to reach and kill me (in my mind) he jumps over my head and hits a cayote behind me and drags it to the ground and the rest is history and from that day on my heart was stolen , i have owned 100;s of APBT sence then and many others have dont things that proved to me they are the only dog for me.

Sorry I disagree, I have a pitt, I also have a yorkie and a stz-mix, and Mia (my Pitt loves to play ball with my yorkie, Also, the large dogs on the hill attached mia before I could get to her and she had to go to the vets, she had turned over on her back and they tore up her chest. My vet said it was the first pitt he had ever seen that would not fight, she thinks she is as small as my yorkie. all in the way they are raised. marrie

I love all the pics of everyones pitties.

I have a group on petster called "Pitbull Pals". Come and join my group.

I do not feel that pitbulls are naturally dog agressive. I feel that they have an extremely high prey drive and are driven by the chase and capture. These dogs are athletes, very intelligent, and their willingness to please their owner is unparralleled. Being that they are so strong and fast when they catch something it's pretty safe to say they will probably be the victor. Well I like to look at it like this " To each their own". What one person loves the next one hates. This will never change!
