You know I was offended also at first. When I was growing up I always heard people say "mix breed". When I moved out here with the hilljacks and rednecks they would say "mutt".

I would love to have an ameraucana someday that lays a nice light to medium blue egg. I have 7 EE's and if I dont get a blue egg then I will hope to find someone that sells Amerucans. My only worry is that on here somewhere someone said that Ameraucans can lay brown eggs so I guess its not 100%. So anyway, I still refuse to call my EE's "mutts" because I just feel like its not such a classy word to use. And it seems to hurt others.

One more thing, if they know that it hurts people to use that term and they still do it then you know what type of person you are dealing with.

Be of good cheer, EE's are super neat because you dont know what color of egg that you will get from them. That makes them awesome...dont you think?

Agreed..To me a chicken is a chicken and an egg is an egg! And I dont take the small things in life too seriously! Thanks for the reply!

Thanks for clearing that up with me.

I'm on edge a little today because of an earlier incident.

I try to relay facts only and sometimes people get upset. I never say the birds are inferior, just a different type of bird.

In fact, most ee's lay better and produce bigger eggs than some of the purebreds.

Hope you enjoy your birdies!

Aww Thanks..I wasnt hurt by it..but more intrigued on human behavior, talking to people at the feed store as if it were a competition..lol. I also own a Mustang, the mutts of the horse world..and he could outlast and endure more than alot of purebreds! So cheers to mutts!

Another thing about mix breeds, they seem to live longer and have less healthy issues.

I had a woman who is interested in my roosters ask me if Easter Egger was a term I made up or what. She said "oh you mean Ameraucanas", I said no, Easter Eggers - mutts. She just said "oh those".

I don't think chicken snobbery is a common practice on here at all. Actually, we have been here and will continue to be here to educate members of this wonderful community. If you've been educated to help you understand what "breed" you have, then I think that is great and hopefully you'll be able to share that with others (who are just learning too). It helps stop the mislabeling that is a reoccuring practice with hatchery birds. Until they stop selling birds under the wrong "breed" label, the education of new poultry enthusiasts will continue because people are being misled in what they are buying.

If you want to know what a real ameraucana or araucana is, there are sites that focus just on those breeds. I think you'll find many long time breeders from here are correct in the information they provide. The 'real thing' is only available through breeders who have put focus on perfecting that breed (not just color variety, egg color and if they have muffs/beards or tufts - but focus on proper body conformation and overall breed status).

I guess i couldve been more specific, I just stole the term police, sounded like a good way to describe the ladies and gent I chatted with at the feed store! Thanks for understanding Jean..sit back put your feet up and have a nice glass of wine and enjoy watching the chicken antics!

We show our Ameraucana's but if it wasn't for that I would have the EE's. You have all those different colors, and don't have to have a million lots to keep all the breeds and colors separated. Some times one big lots sounds really nice to me. So I full understand why people who don't show would love the EE's.
