About a week and a half ago I bought a hen and 5 babies at auction. They're older and fully feathered and she's a great mom. They've all been good until 2 days ago when a chick died. It died overnight, was stiff in the morning with what seemed to be an unusually full crop. It seemed fine that day, if puffing itself up a bit but as it was a really hot day I thought it was trying to cool itself. plenty of shade, cool dirt, tall weeds and cold water.
Now a second chick is obviously dying.
I think something on my property is killing them, maybe something they haven't been exposed to before?
I say this because I have 3 dozen other birds; chickens, geese, ducks, phesants. The new group are getting the same feed as everyone else. The same water (I've since added a vitamin/electrolyte/probiotic mix to theres) They are still isolated ; in a rabbit hutch at night and in an enclosed/roofed movable pen on grass during the day.
I've had poultry for years and these losses just seems bizarre. I can't come up with a reason for this.
I am wondering if there us something in the ground here they haven't been exposed to before? A bacteria? I mean, weve had turkeys, dogs, cats, quail, all kinds of critters. What else can I be overlooking? This has never happened before.

Have you checked for mites? Our new chicks and hen weren’t thriving and kept having the full crop issue too until I realized they had mites so bad they were falling off them! Now I’ve sprayed everyone with permethrin and we are thriving. :) I hope you can figure it out. :)

OKAY! This gives me a place to start. Thank you. I'll check asap.

Hmm. Makes me wonder if their previous owner knew the chickens had a disease, and that's why they sold them? :confused:I don't put it past people. :smack
Yeah... I thought of that too but dismissed it because they've seemed perfectly healthy until 2 days ago.
I feel like if they had started dropping from the start it could be blamed on the seller but to be had these babies for nearly 2 weeks now and they're pretty well grown by chick standards.
Dang it :(

They are likely suffering from coccidiosis as they are being exposed to the new strains on your property.
I would begin Corid water treatment immediately, mom included.
The dosage for liquid Corid is 2 tsp per gallon and for powdered it's 1 1/2 tsp per gallon for 5-7 days. The Corid water must be the only source of drinking water available. Provide a fresh solution daily. After they've finished 5-7 days at this concentration, continue for another week at half that concentration.

Thank you. I can't get to TSC tonight but will go first thing tomorrow.

That's unfortunate. It sounds like the chicks are not doing well if you've already lost one and another is looking lethargic. Coccidiosis can kill fast and cause extensive intestinal damage.
