We hatched 18 eggs (17 light brown, 1 white) from some random eggs we picked up at an auction. We were testing a new LG bator. The birds are 9 days old now and fit into 4 color groups. Any ideas what breeds our mystery chicks may be?

Curious, why did you rule out Barred Rocks? Dominiques have rose combs.

Marans have pink/white legs.

The first is a Barred Rock.

The second is not a Java (wrong leg color) but a Speckled Sussex cross.

The third is likely an Exchequer Leghorn

The forth is not an Easter Egger, but instead a normal brown egg laying mutt. EE's are not the only breed with green legs, and EE's do not have single combs.

The first is a Barred Rock. Definitely not a Marans.

The middle two, I'm not sure of.

I would not count out EE on the last. EE's are mutts, so by definition it could have a single comb. Though it's unlikely as it has no muffs/beard. I believe it to be a mutt, none the less.

#1 is a Barred Rock.
#2 could be a Speckled Sussex cross.
#3 might be a Exchequer Leghorn.
#4 is most likely a black sex link.

Don't think 3 is an Exchequer. They look more like #2 as chicks. I would guess a white Leghorn mix. A lot of the Trader Joe's type eggs hatch chicks that color.

#2 will be mottled, but there are a lot of breeds that are mottled. Once you're absolutely sure of the leg color things will be clearer.
