Augsburger Thread!

Just wondering how early the hens usually mature. My 12 week old roos that I got from Omega Hills have been fertile for at least two weeks now and I was totally surprised. I have four older hens and about two weeks ago I noticed when I was cracking open their eggs that they were fertile and the only roos I have are three Auggie roos. Two that were ten weeks old then, twelve now, and another one about two weeks younger. With the roos maturing so fast, I was just curious how fast I can expect my hens to mature as well. In any case, I'm glad that I have the older hens around since that means that the little roos don't have to bother the younger ones before they are ready.

Oh, and before anyone asks, yes I know that the only way the eggs were fertile were with the young cockerels since I have them in a run with net over the top. No way a stray roo got to the hens.

These look like interesting birds...and I have questions!

1) How is their temperament? I'm thinking about interactions with a mixed flock.

2) Are they heat tolerant? I live in the Albuquerque area and summer can get toasty.

3) What size are the eggs?

Thank you in advance for answers.

!) They seem skittish so far but these are my first ones and they aren't fully mature yet. They have done well in my flock of Ameraucans, Easter Eggers, Cochins, Sultans, and Silkies, though. I love the fact that my roos look out for their girls already.

2) They seem to endure the heat easier than my Easter Eggers since my other girls are always panting and standing in the water pans, not so with the Augsburgers.

3) Can't help here yet since I don't have mature hens yet.

4) Put a topper of some kind on your run. These babies can FLY!!

They appear to be very heat tolerant, they are a little jumpy but it does get a little better as they grow. Egg size is medium to large with some extra large eggs. They are a dependable layer also, giving you lots of white eggs.

I was just wondering, what age do the roos typically start crowing? I have two Auggie Roos who are 18 weeks old and another one 16 weeks. I have yet to hear any crowing, not that I'm complaining, I just was wondering. I have one hen at 18 and three at 16 as well and I'm looking forward to seeing those first eggs.

Just got my answer about the crowing. Yesterday and today at 18 weeks old, I heard one of my boys trying to crow and it sounded so funny. It sounded like he was saying, "Ow, ow, ow!". That is one out of three Auggie boys to crow.
