August Egg Swap ~ Emails have been sent

I have a special pen set aside that I put my broody hens in if I decide to let them set. They stay all by themselves with their eggs so I don't have to worry about jealous mean hens causing trouble. The first one I let set this year didn't do so good. She hatched about 8 out of 10 eggs but half of them died. Dont know if she killed them or the heat got them. The second and last hen that I let set hatched 10 or 12 eggs and all of hers are living. They are too cute!!! Cochins, silkies and sizzles are such cute biddies.

I hatched 7 out of 10 eggs which is pretty good for my first try under a broody and the majority were shipped eggs at that....I lost 1 to the other chickens but the others are all happy and healthy and doing great!!

will be posting pics soon

I got one lonely buff orp chick from my eggs. I didn't think any of the eggs were going to hatch but I got a surprise last night when I heard cheeping in the incubator.

I saw the eggs I sent - they didn't get a hatch. The day after I collected eggs and shipped my duccle hen went broody and sat on the remaining 4 eggs. I was about to take them away thinking they were for sure rotten and yucky but yesterday she had two chicks under her. The other two eggs were bad. I guess it was shipping.

The 5 of mine that hatched I think i'm gonna keep just one of them. They all look to be cockerels and I don't need anymore testosterone around here. lol The one i'm keeping is the first and biggest to hatch. It is a beautiful grey with the chipmunk stripes. Probably has some EE in it but I just want to see how this one turns out. The little pure RIR has a bad attitude.

He's gonna be a real meanie.

Already is but can't do much damage yet. My sizzle house chicken even won't tolerate him.

The barred rock looks to be a little cockerel too. Too bad because I would have added it to my mixed pen.

Thanks for the update. The two darker ones must have came from the wheaten hens because the buff ones did'nt put out dark chicks. That white one though, I sure hope I get a few. I have some eggs in the bator now. Did you get any quail to hatch?

I actually loaded the hatcher a few days early to make room for more eggs in the bators. Their lock down date is the 20th. I just had 2 hatch. They're Bob Whites and They have longer incubation dates. I spilled the water in the brooder and the youngest chick in there got very wet and chilled. So while I was removing the chicks so I could clean up my mess I decided to put the chilled one in the hatcher to warm it back up. Thats when I discovered a chick and another was almost out of the shell. I just finished the last wait for the last batch to hatch and now another back to back. I normally try to have them arther apart.
