The best way to get a hen to go broody is to leave eggs in her nest. Just seeing those eggs pile up will drive some to set. I wouldn't leave them too long. Normally, I don't let mine brood but if I do I write dates on my eggs and remove the older eggs every couple of days - always leaving about 5 eggs in her nest.
On another note . . . a friend gave me a turner full of guinea eggs!! His guinea had been setting on the eggs so I had no idea when they would hatch. He doesn't like to leave eggs in a guinea nest because his guineas will set the eggs out to hatch and once the eggs hatch the mommas run off and leave the keets. Anyway, I put the eggs in the bottom turner and just left them!! They started hatching this week . . .I have been watching them and moving them to the hatching tray when I notice them pipped. About half of them have hatched in the turner and those little stinkers love to ride the turners. Wish I had gotten a picture!! They hatch, jump out of their egg and into an open slot in the turner and then just sit there riding until I take them out. Too funny!! I look in thru the glass door and see guinea heads popping up instead of eggs!!
