August Hatch-A-Long!

Thanks. This is very helpful. I had a chick pip for 30 hours, I finally helped it out. It died a week later. It was sick on and off the whole time. I considered never helping agiain because maybe there is a reason they can't hatch on their own. I think if I had left it for another day or two it would have developed more. He was so tiny. I loved that little guy. This time my chicks were 4 days past due, still hadn't pipped by the way, and 2 eggs looked dead. I thought I could figure out what to do by opening them. One was dead the other very weak. The chick died while I was trying to save it. It had a narrow head like the one that died after a week, but smaller. I know now what the problem was. Sad part is that I didn't have a problem until a few people convinced me I should always have a 90-100% hatch rate and I needed to change a few things. Those changes completely stopped my hatches. Stunted the growth of the chicks in the eggs. Their changes lowered the temp and messed up the way I was checking it but I believed them because they 'had experience' and there were three of them and one in-experienced me. I have learned a lot in the last few weeks. I think that thing will be looking up from here. My homemade incubators are far better than the store and I can get 3 bags of feed for returning it. I am also investing in expensive batteries for my thermostat/hygrometer. I wish there was one that plugged in. And trust myself a little more. Overall, people on here are wonderful and very helpful. Thank you.

I will have a good hatch! Despite the wanna be soccer star, postal workers that use my eggs as their soccerball. Despite the no experienced, non-chicken owning advice givers. Despite my own brainfart mess ups. I will grow an Army of chicks to take over the neighborhood!!! Given lovers unite!!!!

"If it ain't broken don't fix it" has never been more appropriate. What you was doing was working...go back to that. ;)

I am. I had only a few chicks hatch and had been convinced that was a bad hatch. I now know that with my first time, poorly handled eggs and a homemade incubator, that was great. Learning all of the time. I am going back and I think everything will be fine. Only problem is all three incubators are full so I don't know how affected the eggs were. Eventually, they will hatch or not and all new eggs should be fine other than the misshandling of the packages. It's sooooo hard to find anything local.

Might I suggest Craigslist? Not necessarily just for hatching eggs, but also for people selling chickens, then contact them about maybe getting some of their fertile eggs. Then no shipping and mishandling to worry about. Just a thought.

I hear roosters crowing all around me so I know I could find fertile eggs somewhere around here if I wasn't particular about the breed.

Very few people use craigslist where I live. I have tried but very few people reply back or follow thru. People aren't into to them new fangled computers down here.

I also don't have a lot of room so I want to stick to the breeds I want. I got a few eggs locally but hey were mishandled, put in the fridge, upside down, left in the sun. One lady takes good care but she only has 2 kinds of chickens and her eggs are in my incubator now. Doing well.

That's a good idea since your space is limited. I wish you the best with your future hatches now that you know what really works. :)
