August Hatch-A-Long!

OMG!! I am so glad I put in another thermometer. The "good" one was still reading 97 again so I checked the other one and it was reading 102!!! I have NO IDEA how long the other one has been reading wrong

It was spot on but maybe the batteries are running down???? I hope it didn't kill any/too many. I checked the one we candled on day 7 that had a heartbeat already and the heartbeat is still there so I am hopeful.
I think you are fine..............I read that 105 will kill them.....but I had a 106 spike this year and a good hatch.
I believe these eggs are tougher than we think.........They just cannot be a constant temp under the hen.I have one broody that

goes out for more than an hour every day. I figure if she is not worried, I am not going to worry either.............

I agree. This is my first hatch, and while I am watching closely, I am not stressing over every detail. If chickens can do it in nature with crazy temp/humidity differences with the weather, surely we can too!

If I remember correctly, 102 is OK. They may hatch sooner if kept at that constantly, but this is just a few hours so I don't think it'll be a big deal.

And for the lower temp. hens get up off the eggs for up to an hour or so, and those eggs cool so again, you eggs should be fine. It's the long term cool temps that cause problems.

Good Luck,
CG

Thanks - I hope all is well. My biggest concern is that when I thought it was 97 and started cranking up the temp it was really 102. So when I got to 101 and backed off that means it was really 106 - IF it was reading equally wrong all the time

I will be setting 24 silkie eggs from Catdance later this week, along with a few jersey giant eggs from my girls. Can I join in?

Hi Diane and Welcome!
What/who is "Catdance"? I would love to hatch some silkies since i cant find any babies locally.

So i check my silkie eggs today (day 6) and 6 look great. 3 are clear. Would you keep them until day 10 to be sure? Also, I don't have much experience candling but a few of them really look a day or two bigger than they should be. I got them from a local breeder. Just curious. I am doing a drier hatch and temps are 99-100. So happy I added the little fan as I was having temp spikes before that (before the eggs went it).

Glad to see everyone hatching in August! I have ants in my pants!

Of course you can join!!!! Not sure if I want to try silkies again, but the ad on here is tempting.........set 10 on horrible first hatch, but didn't really want the breed (till I looked into them a bit more), but none of them hatched, 3 made it to lockdown, but no hatch. Best of luck with them! Catdance has beautiful birds!
