August Hatch-A-Long!

I picked up 2 batches of eggs at the post office today, Black Austrolorps and Frizzle Chochins. I also picked up a dozen silkies locally. I have another bather of Buff Orpington eggs that I have to pick up at the post office tomorrow. I have 1 one silkie that was supposed to hatch tonight but hasn't pipped yet, but still moving.

Silver Wyandottes- 7 from 12 hatching Friday.
Red Star/Salmon Faverolle from the fridge- Friday.
Bantam mix- 11 from 16 hatching Tuesday.

It could be worse, it could be drugs

Quote:Do not toss it. From my experience some times you see them move other times you don't. Nothing is wrong, the chick may be sleeping. The bigger they get the less movement you see. Next time you check you might see movement.

The veins have gone too though and it looks like a blood ring. i'm getting fed up now because i started out with 10 eggs iv binned 7 the other day cause one stunk an the others were infertile and now this one looks dead aswell now. ready to give up xx

You may have had two eggs broken (12-1+11,  11left -9 remaining=2 unaccounted for).  Is it possible that another hen tried to get in the nest with the broody?  Could a snake have taken an egg or two?

Sorry it happened.

I threw out an egg the other day that was a dud so that's one but there was no trace of the other egg the other hen might have gotten in there but not likely because she has spent the day in my other coop out of her own choice and I set out mothballs to keep snakes out but that could be it :( I'm just not sure I caught it in time

going into lockdown tomorrow

Don't throw in the towel for hatching just yet. If this one doesn't go well. Try again. It's frustrating to think your babies aren't growing in there. But sometimes they're doing more than we think. Again, I wasn't hopeful with this last hatch. Expected one. I marked that one, and it didn't make it. But four others unexpectedly popped out.

When you do pull eggs out for good, I suggest an eggtopsy. It was extremely informative to look and see which eggs just weren't fertile, and when the others quit developing.

I had one that I suspected wasn't developing out of my six. Last night when they went into lockdown I candled them and verified no new growth in a week and no activity. I did an eggtopsy and discovered an embryo that stopped developing at some point after growing wings and a beak. Do you know where a chart is of the stages so I can determine at what day this one stopped?:/

Cool! I have my chick shipment arriving in the morning (pacing around like an expectant mom, LOL!), and then Batch one transfers to the hatcher on Thursday - a new shipment of eggs is due in the same day and will go in the bator. Sunday the second batch goes into the hatcher. Hopefully the first batch will just be starting to hatch and opening it once to put eggs in won't be a big deal. I will have a mister of distilled water standing by.

Wow, you've got your hands full juggling so many at different stages. I have three stages, the five mystery eggs in lockdown, the one with 5 more days that is from my young cockerel (this one started out as just a test for fertility), and the third set is 18 silkie eggs plus two others from my cockerel and laying hen just in case that single one doesn't make it. I really wanted one from my own birds.

Quote: Thanks, i haven't tossed it just yet. im going to check it again in a few days. i done a eggtopsy on my other eggs and 6 had nothing in them at all and the 7th had a few veins and smelt really bad. i was hatching these in time for my sons 3rd birthday an we were having a farm themed party were his friends could come and play with the chicks and r pet lizard. so he will be really sad if we dont get at least one chick. we do have a birthday plan B if it doesnt work out tho xx

Ugh, my super duper awesome flashlight that is my husbands is missing! I need to to candle before lockdown! Ack!

Last time I did I thought they had stopped growing :( but need to check and be sure! I will have another August hatch also as I have eggs on the way! Lol addicted!
