Now I have a question if you fine folks don't mind. When should I throw out any clears? I'm on day 12 and don't know if I should take them out now or leave them in case there's a chance something might develop.

But I don't want to risk an exploding egg either. So far no smell though...I hope I can get some of these guys to hatch...

I have a question for all you experienced hatchers. My Father In Law is having MAJOR issues with his incubator. I think this whole hatch will be a bust. Please help me figure out whats going on.

I had just gotten my GQF 1588 incubator for my birthday in May and he HAD to have one too, so he went out and bought a TSC special... Little Giant incubator , at least it has forced air and a turner.

Anyway, I had him run the incubator 3 days before the eggs were due to arrive (shipped eggs) and he said it held temp 99.5*F and humidity 50% just fine. He has 2 thermometers and a hygrometer in there.

I let the eggs sit for 24 hrs before setting them. He said that after we put the eggs in, the temp was fine but the humidity was all over from 40%-65% . I just told him to keep it as steady as possible at 50% . The bator is in the dining room not in sunlight (that room is dark with the blinds closed) and the house is air conditioned but the vent is not close to it.

I did not candle the eggs until day 7, I know that's bad and there were some really wonky air cells. I do not have much experience hatching myself and I have never set shipped eggs before, only my flocks'. About 1/2 of the eggs were clears and the other half I could see veins. I thought everything was going well until I just candled on day 15, the clears were still clear and the veins are gone from all the rest of the eggs except maybe 2 that are too dark for me to see clearly. I think the entire hatch will be a bust, I don't know what to say. Was it the humidity or was there a temp spike? Is it that I didn't let them sit long enough? Is it that cheap-o bator? I feel really bad, I had pretty good hatches in my Genesis. I don't know what to say to him, he was SO excited for pheasant chicks.

I candled my eggs yesterday on the first official day one to get progression pictures and this egg is very porous looking. The other two aren't nearly as porous. I had one egg like this my last hatch and it hatched just fine but I was wondering what this means? I have a 3 egg incubator and this is day two. The picture is from day one. Should I hatch it or replace it at this point?

HI, I am assuming that you went into the pheasant thread for solid information.....
I only do chickens..........but I wanted to add that all I have is LG'S and I do fine with them .and have for several years.............
I don't know your location....50% is pretty high humidity for me..I do about 35 to 40.
Sometimes it is just lousy eggs.....................I always think in terms of are the parents healthy and well fed, how were the eggs stored and handled prior to shipping?????????
So many factors affect hatches as well as rough shipping....................Hope he gets at least a few......................

THANK YOU!!! Now I can see that my embryo died at about day 12, poor little guy.

You're very welcome.

ChickenFox, me personally, I left the clears throughout the hatch. It was my very first hatch so I didn't want to risk throwing out a chick. I had one stinker at day 21, so I pulled it. On day 22 or 23 I pulled the rest and did eggtopsies. I kind of wish I had pulled them all on day 21 with the stinker. I know that's not what you're supposed to do, but I keep thinking I'd have saved at least one fully formed chick that had been shrink wrapped. The last chick hatched was shrink wrapped on day 21. I had to fully assist him out. I didn't think he was going to make it. But he's up and about like nothing happened. Very heart breaking to see fully formed chicks not make it, but it's part of hatching. I had three fully formed chicks that didn't hatch, five infertile, and the rest were at various stages of development when they quit.

I don't know about why the hatch is a bust, but the humidity changing like crazy when you first set eggs is normal. Best to give it a few hours to balance itself out. If the eggs were shipped they could have been scrambled in transit, or if they were not allowed to rest long enough to reset the air pocket, that can cause a problem as well.

So sorry that his first hatch is not going well. My incubator says to use cheap eggs on your first hatch to work out the kinks of the incubator. I set 30 store bought fertile eggs. Five of those made it to lockdown. I am setting 18 silkies next. We will see.
