August Hatch-A-Long!

I've never heard any of that about using a glass of water. That doesn't seem right to me at all. Thermometers are to measure the air temp. At egg level the goal is 99.5. If putting it in water is making the air temp 106 it would fry the eggs

I just got a hygrometer at walmart that has a probe you can dangle through the vent at egg level. Its about $13 I think and works very well.

A lot of people say to use a baby food jar full of water and check it with a oral thermometer. This temp should represent the temp inside an egg. Some use a thing called a water wiggler to determine temp inside of egg.

Well, my first hatch was a total bust :( ugh I feel horrible for losing all those chicks! They were shipped and stopped growing at various stages. My incubator was steady the whole time. But, I will succeed at hatching! Set some this morning, this time in a paper carton with the bottom cut open for ventilation.... When I turn these, I just prop up one side by placing something under the carton, right?

I had eggs supposed to hatch last night so I decided to go to an auction I read about on facebook on a chicken page. That way I wouldn't sit here and worry. My first livestock auction in Alabama. I was so excited. Until I got there and the locked gate said every 2nd and 4th Saturday. 1 3/4 hour drive. I was not happy. On the way home I stopped at a produce stand. My car wouldn't start back up. Never had anything wrong with my car. It started just when the tow truck pulled up. Got home and I missed the end of the auuction I wanted to bid on, I think, but not sure. Couldn't find it again because there had been about a 100 posts while I was gone. Still not a pip. And this morning, no pips. Still moving inside. If the temp going high doesn't kill the egg, what kind of damage can it do to the chick?

That is simular to what I read. But seems so far off, I'm affraid to go by it.

Finally got my 1st external pip around 11pm last night, a white silkie. Woke up to another pip in a partridge this morning. White chick has made a little progress. But yes they will start and hatch on days 21 22 and 23. Humidity had dropped a little, but I got it right back up. This is a big cabinet so it takes a lot to keep it up.
My incubator is in the basement, and I have a bad left knee, so I dont stare in there as much as I would if it was upstairs. Also keeps me from going crazy staring at eggs! Tomorrow at 5pm is day 21, so we are right on schedule!

Oh my goodness at all the new babies! Congrats everyone!!!

My internet was down for almost 24 hours and I missed over 100 posts. I'm so tickled to see all the beautiful chicks you guys/girls are bringing forth! :-D
