August Hatch-A-Long!

I am so amazed at how smart these baby chicks are. I use the Chicken Fountain watering system in my chicken run so I wanted to start my chicks using a water nipple as soon as possible to save them confusion later. I showed the first chick the water nipple yesterday by tapping the red nipple until the baby tapped it and discovered water. Within hours she was using it herself. The second chick was born in the early evening so I didn't worry about showing her how to get water from it yet because she wasn't steady on her feet by the time I went to bed. But this morning I watched the 1st chick showing the 2nd chick how to get food and water. The 2nd chick got it right away. Now they come out from under the brooder and get a drink when they want it. So Cute! Amazing creatures!

i have 3 pips out of my 7 eggs and its only day 20

hope 2 have a chick today

I am up to 4 pips out of 21 eggs. My poor knee is going to be wore out....lol

I have a brown red Ameraucana rooster that started crowing at 5 weeks.  I didn't know they would crow so young.  He was growing faster the the other chickens.

Wow that is young! I was beginning to wonder if my boy used up all his "man genes" in the early fertility work and didn't have enough to crow. I absolutely LOVE to have a rooster alarm clock! I grew up on a farm so this is like returning to my childhood (I am 50). Our run is outside our bedroom windows so I was afraid how my husband would feel about a Cock-A-Doodle-Do as an alarm clock, (he is a city boy). He was away this morning but I called him to share the news. He is anxious to hear it. I just hope my boy learns to crow better, right now it sounds like my grandkids yelling, lol.

Hahaha you sound like me! I finally got pillows to sit on my chair in front of the incubator and more to lay on the floor in front of the brooder cage. I have Osteoarthritis in my left knee and right hip so watching this all has been quite painful, but so worth it!!!

2 more weeks till my 4 hatch! It's fun hearing about everyone's hatching chicks! My broody hen is taking great care of those eggs! I was surprised she would be broody so young. She is only 6 - 7 months old! When her mom hatched her, her mom was about 10 months! I would have never thought a hen would hatch chicks under 1yr old! It's funny how different every hen is. My first broody (Olive) sat on 14 eggs while her daughter (the one hatching right now) is only sitting on 4!

Another hatching is very near...the temp in the incubator just jumped up 1 degree. It has done that just before both of the previous hatches. Then it drops back to normal right after.
