August Hatch-A-Long!

Wow that is young! I was beginning to wonder if my boy used up all his "man genes" in the early fertility work and didn't have enough to crow. I absolutely LOVE to have a rooster alarm clock! I grew up on a farm so this is like returning to my childhood (I am 50). Our run is outside our bedroom windows so I was afraid how my husband would feel about a Cock-A-Doodle-Do as an alarm clock, (he is a city boy). He was away this morning but I called him to share the news. He is anxious to hear it. I just hope my boy learns to crow better, right now it sounds like my grandkids yelling, lol.
We have a crowing competition every morning.. First the two bantam cochins, followed by the Barred Rock Roo than the Welsummer and Maran Roos. I think it is cool. I was not raised on a farm and like it better than a barking dog.

I don't think my two chicks are the same breed after all. I just noticed that chick #2 has fur on her legs!? I will try to post a pic...

Ok, had to go to my desktop to add the pictures.

Here is the little patch of hair running down Butterscotch's leg. (you can click the pic to see a bigger pic)

Compared to no hair on Sunshine's leg.

Also, Sunshine (without hairy legs) has wide flat wings, and Butterscotch (with hair on the legs) has short curled around wings and she is smaller than Sunshine.

Anyone know anything about these two characteristics in a chick? Both came from tan eggs.

Hummm cochin mix? But it usually extends to the feet. Has to be a mix of sorts.

Aha...I looked them up, I see what you mean about the hair going all the way to the feet. My little girl doesn't have near the hair they do so if she is one then she is definitely a mix. It will be interesting to see what these (hopefully) five chicks turn out to be.

A chick hatched in a matter of minutes and I think there is a problem. Is that her entrails hanging out or just some part of the yolk sack??

1000

No that is normal. The stringy stuff at the very end attaching to the egg will break off and this will fall off. Just watch it to make sure others arent stepping on it. It can pull on her insides if they do step and pull.

Normal...it will fall off in just a bit, don't pull on it or try to remove it yourself. Its like afterbirth in humans.

My second chick had a blob of it stuck to her belly. It dried up by this morning and is already separating from her. Only her down feathers are holding on to it mostly.

CONGRATS ON THE NEW BABY CHICK!
