August Hatch-A-Long!

we started ordering eggs because I couldn't find them locally...when I get the hens and roos I need to continue my flock then I wouldn't buy e bay eggs either....I have gotten eggs from some very wonderful flocks though...the troubled flocks are fewer than the successes...if your looking for a trustworthy breeder from ebay I have experience with several! and our own Roxanne on here!! I bought Lavender orps and lavender am eggs from her and all were doing great last I checked!

I don't think I would buy eggs off eBay. I like to know the breeders reputation and you just can't know that about an eBay seller. Also, I have heard that there are people on eBay selling infertile store bought factory eggs as fertile hatching eggs. Who can prove it, unless you crack an egg and look at yokes yourself.
I actually purchased my Banty EE eggs from Ebay. They were very nicely packed and they sent extras. Only 1 was cracked and most started developing. I blame temp flucuations, homemade bator and my inexperience as to why so far only 9 eggs still developing of 23. The seller had great feedback as well including some follow-ups with comments on the great hatch rates.

Ugh, had to assist all 3 of the late bloomers. Each was wedged in a bad position and unable to zip either at all or all the way. One had scratched his egg yolk and ruptured it and it had dried and glued him to the inside of his shell. I peeled each shell back slowly and used coconut oil to make the membranes translucent so I could confirm they had absorbed all the yolk and blood they needed before letting them out. All three out without bleeding and with all egg absorbed. The one with the ruptured yolk most concerns me as his naval doesn't look well. We'll see how it goes. He is a real fighter though. He was kicking like crazy inside his dry shell the whole time I was working on him.

This little guy had the exact same malposition as slow poke with his head above instead of below his wing - and back at the top of the shell with virtually no air cell. He had also pipped through the side and had a very dry membrane around his pip.

Only our 2nd Rhode Island White chick in the batch that made it to hatch - same malposition again as slow poke.

You can see how our yolk glued chick looked before I decided to intervene. He could not get past this point. There was virtually no air cell and he had pipped through the side. All kinds of messed up.

Busted yolk all over this baby. He is shellacked to the shell and himself. He tried really hard to free himself and was kicking like crazy and I could feel his toenails scratching the inside of the shell.

Long day/night/day with 2 hours sleep, but with any luck maybe all these babies will make it

Glad they made it.
I think I'll try and see what's going on in my eggs. I candled and pulled 6 more eggs today (day 22). Two eggs had chicks but they had stopped developing between 14 and 18 days (small) and three more had died before absorbing the yolk. The last one looks like it had half absorbed the yolk but it died before finishing it. There was only one egg in the incubator that I still have some hope for because I think I saw movement. The others were still questionable as to what was going on. Still a lot of darkness in there but at least no liquid moving in there like in some of the ones I pulled.

Alright, thank you! I'm obviously a little too excited! I even have a spare iphone turned into a remote viewing camera ontop of my incubator to make sure my temp is stable at all times of the day.

LOL, too funny! Wonder what your dog thinks when it sees a chicken using its door?

My chicken scoots in when my dog lifts the door sometimes. Once my dog changed her mind and my chicken got caught half in half out. I had to let her loose. It was so funny. She wasn't hurt at all but she knew she wasn't supposed to be sneaking in so she didn't want to make any noise. She was trying to figure it out herself. Her butt wiggling in the air. Oh I wish I had my phone with me then to get that picture.

I don't know that raising the temps is going to do anything now. (I could be wrong though). I would leave the temp where you had it, they chicks effect the temps anyway...as they hatch out it goes up then down. I just tried to keep steady temp between the fluctuations caused by hatching chicks. Is your humidity up? Should be at least 65% Opening the incubator to check on them during lockdown can wreak havoc on your humidity...try to resist that. Some chicks just take longer. I think I read that silkies are more like 2-3 days longer than regular chickens. It is hard to be patient, I know,

My silkies all hatched on day 20......lol I think it is a temp issue during incubation. Leave the bator closed until day 25 then you can float them

That's basically what I meant, you know the sellers reputation before you buy from them. Because Roxanne is known here she can be verified as a good breeder.
