They are barred rocks. I searched but found too many differing opinions on what's the best way to sex them so I was wondering if anyone here had experience with sexing this breed.there is some information if you do a search.....is it a sex link? if I remember correctly the spot on it's head means boy....but I don't always retain info if it's not what I was specifically trying to study...lol....um a you know....older person!! lol
Good luck! Hope you get lots of babies! I had to leave the house for a few hours. I was making myself crazy watching the bator. Nothing's going on.well I have another baby zipping. this one is a Japanese bantam....there's 7 or 8 more due over the next several days. 1 for sure I would have thought would at least have pipped it's air by now! we shall see!
OMG, I have chicks!! I had to leave all day and today is day 19. I just came home and hurried out to check on my broody and when I leaned down I heard chirping. I reached under her (yes, got pecked) and pulled out a sweet, fully dry little yellow and brown chick!!! I am beside myself with excitement. After careful inspection, out of 5 eggs, there are two more hatching with one of them with its head looking right out and clearly alive. The other one I could only feel a hole in one side of the egg. There are two more green eggs that I couldn't see anything happening yet. Worth the wait!!! These are chicks that are crossed with a New Hampshire roo and either SL wyandotte or BO and the green ones are EE.
Yay! Hope I have some when I get home!![]()
I'm guessing this little chick is BO and New Hampshire cross. First one hatched out of 5 eggs. Two more very close.

The fluffy chick is on the right and of the two hatching you can see one of the chick's little faces. The other cracked egg shows movement and has air. One of the green eggs has a small little external pip. I'm going to leave them alone till morning. Hopefully when I get up tomorrow all five will be out and doing well. Then I'll move mama broody and babies to another pen for safety because they are in the coop with the rest of my flock.
That's a great deal. Good luck and don't give up.Yeah!! So excited I went to the local hatchery to get a new bator and got a "new to me" one that they tested and guarantee for $68 its a hova-bator 1583
so I'm so excited getting a new batch of eggs this weekend and they'll go in tues!!! Se you on the sept hatch along![]()
