Australians - Where are you all????

I agree. I agree also that they can get noisy. But if you want one there should be similar local laws to what exist for dogs or other nuisances.

Personally if I could, I wouldn't have one in a backyard incase it got nasty. But at the same time I'd love to be in a position where I could breed and play with genetics.
Its easy to train a dog to be quiet - I know - I've had to do it - not too easy to train a rooster not to crow - but if you know a way I'm all ears...

I've never had a nasty rooster yet. If you raise more than one at a time it is no different to any other animal - they create their own internal hierarchy and usually stop at dominance behaviour. If one did get nasty around my place - it would end up in the pot!

I had a look for it but couldn't find it, it may have even been on this Thread but someone did comment to me along the lines of having a little coop in their shed for their rooster and that was where he slept at night .. because it was darker in the morning, he didn't crow early. Then, when the sun was well and truly up, he was moved to the outside coop and run. If anyone is interested, I will try and find their comments.

I personally do not want a rooster but can understand why other people do.

Hi, I'm not suggesting you can train them. I'm just saying that I don't believe a single roo here and there makes more noise than the Harley down the street.

Hi again, I know the post you are talking about and it was on this thread. The person was trying to sell the hutch. I noticed it was deleted.

Thanks MyHaven, that explains why I can't find it lolz.
It sounded like something to try if you really wanted to keep a rooster.
and ... enough already, stop raining!! lolz

An enclosed shed would probably work and I agree that the odd rooster here or there is much less annoying then motorbikes (motor cross bikes in the reserve in my case). In the past I've had neighbours complaining about cows calling for their calves and ewes calling for their lambs and this from people who choose to live on acerage! At least my current neighbours are much more agreeable.

I don't know if I that would be kind to the roo.

I call the people you describe "prickle farmers". They want to be bushies but don't know how to live on the land. Good neighbours are worth their weight in gold.

Hi again Teila....I read recently that the way to stop roosters crowing early in the morning is to have their perch high in the shelter so that when they begin to crow they can't raise their heads....does that sound feasible?
