Australians - Where are you all????

Hi,Annabella, nice to hear from you. Greetings from Sunny Tasmania! I know what you mean about husbands!
Living in the country we can have as many roosters and chickens as our neighbours can stand(!), however he has one rule no chickens in the house, and I have a little black bantam who just doesn't seem tofit in with anyone else and would make a beautiful house pet because she is so tame, and like you I am biding my time and waiting for my moment! Good Luck with it!

Oh, by the way, I was told that in some parts of Australia Bantams are sometimes not considered as chickens, more as "ornamental birds" you could investigate that one,especially for Silkies!

Ducky from Oz - your duckling is adorable! I want him! I'll let you know about the frypan, it will take a while to settle yet, the temp fluctuates a bit , but the humidity is a real problem, but I'll work on it. Ordered a dozen more eggs today, black and buff silkies. I am SO crazy

The frypan is certainly a cheaper method than a new incubator, and it was the only way to hatch around the middle of last century, and as you say was done successfully. We shall see!

Hi, and welcome! We are both from Tassie, I come from Railton,even though it is at the other end, it's nice to meet another Tasmanian on the site! I have Silkies too, 8 in all and 18 incubating!!

Maybe you can tell me something? Can you buy rice hulls in Tassie? I keep hearing about how good they are for bedding but can't find them around here. What colour Silkies do you have?

I have learnt so much on this site and everyone is so friendly and it's so good to have this Aussie thread. Bye for now!

Hi there citysilkie, Nice of you to join us on here. Its a great site...And has become quite an addiction for me

Of course its a great place to share information- make friends from around the world- Share stories of your poultry- and best of all...A great medium for showing off photos of newly hatched babies.

This is Jayden..A very special Duckling ho may need surgery to save his life. I have to phone my vet tomorrow to see if its possible.

And a group shot... There is still one more to come. I have her out of the bator on a hot water bottle now- She is nearly out of the egg- but the bator was smelling rather ripe -so I wanted to clean it.

Little Jayden has A vet appointment!! I couldnt speak to the vet herself on the phone this morning- But as she only works at the clinic a few mornings week- and I cant get there with him beacause I work too- I will be taking him in tomorrow night. He will then be seen by the vet on Thursday- and she will ring me to talk to me about treatment. I sure hope she can fix his little leg-

I know I wont get much sleep until he is home again- and know that he will most likely have a splint of soome kind on his leg. What ever care he needs...I am ready for that if it will improve his quality of life. He is such a little trooper...He scoots around the brooder- even faster than some of the other ducklings walk! I will let you all know how things go once I know more.

I got a call from the vet just after 9am...She said it was worse then she thought when she heard about Jayden through my phone call. She Asked if it was ok to anesthetize him to try to relocate the tendon- I knew it was his only chance- and the risk was huge- But I had to at least try to give him the best chance at a normal life. The vet phoned back and explained that the joint itself was also deformed and there was nothing she could do. She asked if she should let him pass rather than wake him up- But I couldnt let her. While he was little enough to get around he wouldnt be in any pain or discomfort But I would have to do the right thing by him eventually.- I thought even two or three weeks life was better than nothing.. I spoke to her about collecting him. The phone rang again just a few minutes later- I knew it wasnt good news. My poor little Jayden didnt wake properly from the anesthetic- He passed away very quickly- and peacefully snuggled up to the ostrich toy I had taken in there for him for the night.

So..Goodnight little Jayden..You will always be fondly remembered.

I am heartbroken. But I also now know that my beautiful little Regie - had I tried to take her to the vet 6 months ago- would no longer be here either. She is such a happy little girl- Knowing there was nothing I could have done to help her has given me some peace of mind. She will continue to be a bedroom duck. She is taking some interest in the curent babies. I hear her talking to them at night. Its so sweet.

Just wanted to edit this with an additional comment! We have all these fluffy,feathery friends and we know that eventually they are going to break our hearts, but we STILL do it because of the joy they bring us while they are here, so everyone of them is worth the heartache! I'm not a big fan of the Royal family in the UK, but one thing QE2 said has become one of my favourite quotes - "grief is the price we pay for love" .
