i have a roughly 3 year old female australorp who cant open her left eye. she has no other symptoms. i separated her from the flock in case whatever it is is contagious. for the last day ive been flushing it with saline and i have vetericyn coming in the mail but it got delayed until friday. is there anything else i can do in the meantime?

Flushing with saline is good, and you can also apply a small dab of plain Neosporin 2-3 times daily. Do you see any bubbles, foam, or gunk in the eye?
i havent seen any sort of gunk or bubbles so far. she doesnt have much energy, but she’s always been a pretty quiet and gentle bird. i’ll start the neosporin now and continue flushing. should i give her electrolytes as well? i cant find my bag of hydro hen i’ll have to get some more tomorrow. while im at the feed store would you recommend anything else?

Since her eye is closed, I would offer fluids with electrolytes for a day or two, and some mushy wet feed 2 times a day. The Neosporin in the eye may sooth it, so she can open it. Is she having any other symptoms?

she has opened it a few times when i flush it out. i think she knows its helping and sits still but she cant open it all the way and closes it right after. i havent noticed any other symptoms

heres a close up image of her. is there anything i’m not seeing? injury, gunk, bubbles? i dont understand why she’s having issues

It could just be sore or painful. I would not use the Mupirocin since it looks like it has been used a bunch. It is not prescribed for eyes. If you have some eye drops or can get saline from the drugstore that would help if she has any crusty or runny eye. Vetericyn eye wash or gel works too. We used to recommend Terramycin, but it is not available w/o a prescription. Otherwise, I would leave it alone.

okay thank you for the advice. the vetericyn finally comes in today so i’ll use that tonight. i want to get her back in with the flock asap. they were mostly all raised together from chicks but you know how chickens are. she’s always been fairly low in the pecking order so i dont want to keep her ostracized much longer. but i also dont want to put her back if whatever it is is possibly contagious.
