So Peeps had black eyes....but they seem to be changing to amber. ?!? Is that normal? She's about a year and a half old.

Thats strange..It isnt disease related is it? I have had only one over the years but the color wasnt amber it was just dark brown, noticably lighter than the others, shes still a great egg layer for my mom... A lot of breeders are adding buff orp back into the australorps like australians did..so that might be where its from ? Interesting do you have any pics?

This is the first time I have tried to post a picture, here it goes

she's in the foreground of the picture. She's adpoted from a friend (all of them are) so I don't know where she came from or if she's some sort of mix, they just told me she was an Australorp. She's a huge moose of a bird.

Diggiing back through old pictures, I might be mistaken that her eyes were darker before. I noticed this AM he eyes look black from certain angles, but later in the day they seemed lighter, so maybe it is just a trick of the light. I thought though from reading up on chicken types that the eyes were supposed to be black.

Australorps should be like Orpingtons, their eyes should be a dark brown, that IF the correct color can be mistaken as black. I like to call them DEMONICALLY DARK BROWN EYES. Not Black.

Are you shure that is a Australorp?
Where did you get it at, was it a hatchery?

Australorps shoud have a Dark Brown Eye..

I got her from a friend who I think got her from a hatchery. The eye is darker in the bottom/back part of the eye, but a pretty bright amber color in the front/forward part. It just seems like its a lot brighter than described on breed sites

Does she look as if she isn't an australorp?

looks like She will be a great egg layer for you.. If you interested in the standard the eye should be dark brown , very dark brown and fairly round. They have a freindly look to them. Look for birds with a nice green sheen to feathers too try to avoid purpleing . The sole of the foot should be a whitish or slate grey. jersey giants have a yellow sole to the foot. she seems to look more like an australorps to me. She could be a cross. she might be a hatchery girl but dont worry , they are still very good egg layers and lay eggs for a long time ..

I have at one time or another had everything from RIRs to assorted bantams and even an EE. a lot of the bantams have the round dark big eye some have yellow smaller eyes and a bit of a vapid look . sort of like a blank empty stare like a doll. Loved them all but tend toward the big dark freindly eye of the australorps. Dont let the freindly eye of the roosters fool you thou , they are as protective as any breed if you get in between them and the girls. I went to reach in the breeding pen side door to grab a fertile egg the other day , the rooster was waaaay out in the pen, Thought good hes out of the way and wont pay any attention to me..honest to god he appeared out no where, slammed my hand and broke the egg. He olny ignores me when hes between me and them.

Here is one of my hens and a rooster, they are 2 years old.
