Bought 3 of these labeled Barred Rocks at the local Rural King because some friends had some and my 9 yr old son loved them. Now thinking they were labeled incorrectly. My best uneducated research brings me to Australorp or Jersey Giant, but being our maiden voyage so to speak, I thought I'd ask the experts here.

Also uncertain about gender.. This one is quite loud compared to the others (it's siblings and several other breeds), so has me wondering.

It's likely a Black Australorp chick. Check the bottoms of its feet; if they are whitish, grayish, or pinkish, it's a Black Australorp. If they are an obvious yellow, it's a Black Jersey Giant. It's too young to be certain of its gender yet, but I'm leaning toward pullet.

Thanks both of you for the input. I was leaning towards Australorp & my son wasn't upset when I told him they were labeled wrong. He just took to trying to pronounce Australorp.

I will have to check their feet just to see what that says. I've read on here that hatchery chicks aren't always true to that, but who knows.

The bottoms of hatchery grade Australorps' feet can vary. Instead of being white, they are sometimes grayish or pinkish. However if the bottoms of your birds' feet are an obvious yellow, it's a Black Jersey Giant (even if it's hatchery grade), but I would honestly be surprised if it turns out to be a Jersey Giant as Australorps are far more common at hatcheries and feed stores.

Thanks so much for all of your help. The bottoms of their feet are pinkish/flesh tone so all points toward Australorp & I've read some good things about them.
