Country Birds
Chirping
At the beginning of the year, before I had chickens, my sister-in-law was getting rid of her two hens and asked if I wanted them. I knew the basics of chicken breeds, but she told me the black chicken was an Ameraucana that laid blue eggs and the orange one was a Rhode Island Red. I knew the orange one was definitely not a RIR, but after looking at some pictures online, I thought maybe a Welsummer, due to the neck colors.
Well sure enough we got a brown egg pretty much every day and a blue egg every other day or so. I always complained that black chicken was the friendliest, but it was too bad she couldn’t lay as much as the brown egg layer
However, the more I’m learning about chicken breeds, the more I’m thinking the orange chicken is actually an Ameraucana that lays the blue egg and the black one is maybe a black australorpe that lays the brown eggs?
The orange one is going through a very ugly-stage moly right now, but hopefully pictures are still good enough for an ID.
