Australorps breed Thread

So what would you estimate is the downside of simply throwing all the BA Australorps and BJG Jersey Giants into one pen and letting them cross breed? Aside from the obvious loss of purity it should help the BJG egg production and help the overall size and beast leg strength of the Australorps. Seems like an obviously likely beneficial cross. Any thoughts?
Bad idea, just another mutt. BA's white skin, JG yellow skin. BA's pinkish white soles, JG yellow soles. Generations of who knows what will hatch, but knock yourself out if you are so inclined.

Bad Idea. It could take generations of breeding to bring out the desirable traits you are wanting with this cross.

See what I was talking about earlier? The bird of curves!

Notice also that the feathers are tight! Not loose like on orpingtons. Also, I bet the are they correct weight.

Do you think they would Loose at a poultry so in the US because the were too little?

Thoughts about when they will lay or how they look?

With regard to "when", I have 2 BAs from Ideal Hatchery (2012) and 2 from Meyer (2015). The latter are the "non standard" ones with black legs that were very yellow as chicks. One still has yellow foot bottoms. But the nice woman at Meyer said they weren't an accidental shipment of BJGs (still not sure about that). In any case mine started laying at:
  • 2015's: 28 weeks, 3 days and 28 weeks, 4 days
  • 2012's: 23 weeks, 0 days and 29 weeks, 3 days

If Australian BAs start to lay at about the same age as USA hatchery BAs, yours will start laying anytime between next week and 6 to 7 weeks. Let's see, early March here is early September there (season wise) so you should have plenty of eggs this winter.

I'll leave the "how they look" to those who know about these things. They certainly look like Australian BAs rather than USA BAs.

But since Kurt is having to wipe the drool off his beard, I guess they look really good

No, they would lose because they don't look like USA BAs!

I Know!

This one did win for Matt 1616 and she does not look that different from the Australian standard.

Interestingly, the BA's I got from Meyer in Sept 2015 recently started laying at 23 weeks. This would seem to point to a possible mix-up also.

With those combs, I'd bet her birds will lay soon! They sure are purdy. :)
