Adorable!
And 50% is really all I could hope for with shipped eggs!
Cammy, I may be buying Silkie eggs from you in the Spring

(especially since we won't have to hassle with shipping!)

Hi Grace

I've only gotten sicker since I have talked to you last, but I think I have figured it out. It's the chickies in house! So, no more hatching for me until spring, that's for sure. I have 3 different meds that I am taking and non of it's working. Thought about going to the emergency room last night, I was coughing so bad I was strangling.

I thought 50% was good for shipped eggs.

I bet you'll get at least a 95% hatch rate being able to pick up the eggs. That is about what I get with my own eggs. I have lots more pics on my website you can check out.

Holler at me when your ready.

1 of them - I opened up the top and found that it had pipped into the air cell, but not out of the egg...it was gasping when I opened up the top of the egg. I then opened it up a little more - just at the top to see what was going on and to make sure she had plenty of air and wasn't suffocating because of anything else. Then I put her back in the bator. About 6 hours ago, she got herself out of the rest of the egg by herself, but is still very weak. She has fluid along the back of her neck and her neck is weak. I'm not sure if this is a deformity or if her body is not quite done developing and it'll resolve on it's own. I still have her in the bator because the temp in there is steady and it's safe/quiet.

The other egg is a big mystery. I opened up the top (only the shell - not penetrating any membranes) and it looked like it wasn't fully developed (it's not filling up the egg like the others and lots of fluid still inside) - but it's alive! There is no pip at all - all membranes are still intact...so I just put her back in the bator to finish developing - if that's what's going on. Today, she's filled up the egg more and not so much fluid - but still nowhere near where she needs to be to hatch. I'm wondering if that one just suffered from retarded growth. If it finishes developing...it may be ok and hatch...so we'll see on that one.

I'll get picts of the weak one with the funny neck in a little bit and post it up if you guys are interested.

I had a couple chicks with air pockets but they died, before hatching. They didn't have any fluid in the pockets like yours does. They were shipped eggs also.

Would like to see pics when you get a chance.

The little one that hatched has curled toes on the right foot. Here's a picture of the healthy one with the little runt and you can see her curled toes. I put a bandaid on it and hopefully that will straighten out. She's doing so much better. I really didn't think she would make it, but she's a little fighter!

The camera cannot capture the puffy neck very well. You can kinda see it in these pictures, the left side is sticking out further, that's because there's a little sac of fluid on the back of the neck right there. I think it's smaller today, so hopefully the body is redistributing that excess fluid. I put her in the brooder so we'll see if the increase in movement will increase circulation and get that extra fluid out. Would love to know what this problem is...but from what I can see - it's not serious at this point. I don't know if it's a deformity or just a minor setback. She is able to lift her head and she's improving - so she's heading in the right direction...hopefully that will continue and she'll catch up to the others.

Here is the egg that is not ready to hatch yet. It has filled up the egg a lot more now and doesn't have all that excess fluid in there anymore. The chick inside is moving a LOT. I don't know why it's taking so long for this one to develop. If it hatches, it's going to be a really late hatch. I hope all it needs is time. I don't know if I've endangered it by opening up the top, but I do that for all the nonhatched eggs and usually I find dead chicks or ones that needed help. This is the first time I find a chick that's just not done growing yet. I opened it up late last night and it's still going strong in there.

That's no good! I wonder if you have a feather allergy? Or maybe it is just the dust that the chicks create...

It will be a few months, at least, since I won't get the incubator back out until the weather starts to get a bit warmer.

I think it is all the dust that they create. I am constantly wiping everything down. I will not be hatching anymore until Spring either. That way they do not have to stay in the house so long. I wish I had known earlier, but I'll make it through. Fixing to take some nyquil, so maybe I will not wake up coughing again tonight.

I'll have plenty if you decide you want some.

You have a great night.

Looks like some pretty veins showing to me, but also looks like the sac may be dry also. If it is, it will stick to the chick and it will not get out.

I did this and put a moist towel over the egg, and that was a big mistake on my part, I drowned it. You might mist it a little just to moisten it.

I have had some with the toes curled up before, but they all straightened out on their own.

I stopped helping any of mine. It's hard but I figure their must be a reason they couldnt' hatch. But, I hope the little guy makes it out.
