Australorps !!!! I'm obsessed

I have 2 Black Australorps, 2 Barred Rocks, 1 black sex link and 1 Buff Orp. My Buff Orp gets picked on by The Black Australorps and they are a little skittish. My BSL and Barred Rocks are by far the friendliest and calmest birds in that flock.

Sorry I don’t have any pictures, the girls are molting and not very pretty atm.

I checked with my local farm supply store, North 40, and they will have all of those breeds of chicks when I am ready. I'm a little worried at what i'll end up with, I hear stores are not that great at sexing baby chicks or labeling the breed correctly :( I guess it will be an adventure?
Or you could order online from a hatchery. I’ve bought from both feed stores and directly from a hatchery. Hatcheries also have more options :D

Here's my Australorp. Unfortunately he was very large and very untrustworthy around children, so he ended up in freezer camp. He was handsome though.

Get a few extra chics, you’ll probably end up with a couple cockerels. You can pick your favorite and raise him up to be a rooster and put the remaining cockerels in the oven.

I have various breeds, one is a buff orpington and australorp. I think australorps are a lot more docile than the orpingtons, my orpington and the other orpingtons I've had are usually skittish and top boss of the pecking order but they really have a personality!
Here is my australorp.

I honestly thought about plymouth rocks but they can be a bit bossy. I know this is true of most any breed but I'll be a first time chicken owner and am a little worried.
Yes, that is actually true, I have a couple barred rocks and one of them is extremely bossy towards the all of the other birds when eating orpingtons get over it after awhile and get pretty friendly with the other birds.

Yep, I plan to. Will likely get an Australorp, Buff Orpington, Speckled Susex, Welsummer. These seem to be gentler than some of the others. I know its a crap shoot, so we'll just see.

Right now we are full of snow and I really need a coop set up before I bring home chickies. Trust me the moment the snow starts melting....:ya
Oh if you don't want the raising chicks experience, you can get month olds online at most of the reputable hatcheries for a moderate price. And DO NOT raise them inside your room or you'll come back here in the spring with a whole new post lol. Good luck, can't wait to see your babies.

I didn't see that option on Mypetchicken.com . I do plan on brooding the baby chicks in their coop, which is why I'm waiting a bit to get them.

We started with australorps, Buff Orpingtons, Rhode Island reds and Columbian rocks.

We got rid of the rocks, couldn’t stand them! Bossy and noisy.

Our sweetest hens are the RIR

And I find the australorps and BOs comparable in temperament, quiet, docile hens. I love the look as well!
