I honestly thought about plymouth rocks but they can be a bit bossy. I know this is true of most any breed but I'll be a first time chicken owner and am a little worried.
I'm a first time chicken owner and i have a Plymouth Rock. She was a fantastic baby and pretty cool as an adult too. Her name is precious lol she loves being handled. She's squalkative but not mean to the other birds.
I also have a BO names Maple. absolutely love her disposition. Will definitely get more BO in the future.

Go with what you like and what 'speaks' to you. Everyone on here has an opinion as to why and which.
I agree with Chullicken. Everyone will have a different preference and what they think is the best/better/cutest/calmist/quietest... you get the picture.

But just in case I'll give my 2 cents. I started with 4 chickens and they were mixed (Barred Rock, Rhode Island Red, Buff Orpingoton and Red Sexlink) I can tell you my RIR is the boss and keeps EVERYONE in line. My Sexlink and Barred... are 2 and 3 and my poor Buff is last. She is the sweetest. I don't feel like my Barred Rock is dominant or mean but my Buff can be quite mean to the hens below her. But with that being said I love all of them and they make me laugh.... A LOT.

Good luck with anything you go with!!!

I love my australorps! I had one as a kid, she was super sweet and despite me not knowing exactly how to hold her (partially because she was huge compared to me) she loved being held and would never run away when I tried to approach her. I also have one now, Ellie, who is super tolerant and very beautiful.

Here's my BA Rachel, she gets along pretty well with Buff Orpington, White Plymouth Rocks, Barred Rock, New Hampshires and 1 very active, nosy and quirky White Leghorn which I just adore. All of mine are hatchery, but I enjoy them very much.

I read that welsummers were intelligent and social.
Unfortunately mine doesn't like being touched and she's flighty. She's about 8 months old and hasn't laid yet! I can't wait to see her eggs!
Ugh, the laying thing!

We had a month or so of eggs and then one layer died suddenly (it broke my heart) and the other one decided to molt, and the rest of the flock followed suit.

They're supposed to be good layers, but we got them in late March, and I guess the timing with winter triggered a stop in egg production. They also had some stressful experiences that affected them. Hopefully we'll have eggs soon, though.

I also got mine in April. I'm sorry you lost one!! Poor thing.
Crossing my fingers we get eggs soon!!
