Australorps !!!! I'm obsessed

That would be a beautiful combination. My husband has requested a flock that doesn't match. I like them all the same, and he likes variety, so the compromise would be an Australorp or RIR.
All 12 of mine are different. I’d love them the same if they were all uniform too but at least if one goes missing i could easily tell which one.

I can be really cheeky with my comments, but it was so cute how people started chiming in and declaring their chickens as the best breeds, when this is a discussion on Astrolabs. I can't ever spell it correctly.

Anyway, my first choice chicken was a Buff. I love the coloring, and they're so sweet and friendly. But in our obnoxiously hot climate, I decided something just a pound lighter or so would be that more comfortable and likely to survive the heat, so I brought home a box full of Wellies.

They're delightful little chicken critters. The BEST ever, folks!!! Numero Uno!!!!!!

:celebrate:woot:ya
I enjoy it too. I'm glad we don't all like the same breed 'cause I'm not sharing my lovely chanties with anyone. :p

Good point with being able to tell them apart.

There are days when I have two Rosemary the Head Hens, two Hortense, two Fibonaccies, because they all look the same. Sometimes Gertrude is found pecking at a spot on the deck and at the same time eating a feather under a Toyon shrub, and yet there's one true Gertrude!!

I think a varied flock is beautiful. All matching is too OCD for me. But then again I have OCD, so there you go. If we introduce a different breed, it needs to be a blender breed. Nothing sudden and startling. But then that's OCD, too. It's inescapable!!!!!

@BantyChooks do you have pictures of your chanties? :)
Oh boy, do I!
I'll put them in a spoiler so as not to detract from the original thread purpose. Note: the females pictured are NOT up to SOP and aren't ideal breed representations. The young pullet is okay but not the more mature one.

I keep getting Barred Rocks and Wyandottes confused for some reason. Here's an adorable photo in the media slider. Which one is this? I love looking for new photos in that slider.

@moniquem Since you only have room for a few chickens, were you able to source an Astroloop (I give up on the spelling) breeder in your area? I don't think I've seen them at feed stores here. But then again Welsummers aren't easy to find either, and yet lo and behold, when I called one of the feed stores, they were just about to receive a hundred Wellie chicks, much to my delight.

Barred Rock... Wyandottes come in many varieties, but they all have rose combs.

Here is my Australorp, Artemis :love She is a pleasure and I would definitely recommend this breed! She is near the bottom of the pecking order, but she holds her own when needed, she's predator savvy, and she is great with people. I also have a barred rock, and I would not get this breed again. She is a great layer, but her temperament borders hostile.
