I am using a 55-gal plastic barrel, that I have cut down to size. I am sitting the barrel on the ground to keep the water inlet lines from freezing using submersible heater, an adjustable water pressure valve, that will be connected to community water system. The underground PVC line riser pipe will be attached to a 3/4 inch, high pressure flexible pipe that will be connected to the small in size water pressure valve That lets me adjust the water to any desirable height, using a spring set screw. Now If gofers don't naw hole in bottom of barrel, which I probably would never know, because of deep sandy loam soil. With the reply I got, I will start putting the horizontal water nipples 12-14 inches off the ground for roosters, and the work down with more nipples for different size Orpington chickens. I do have a water cut off for the water line that is for the garden, and covered chicken yard & coop. What do you think, any better suggestions, or ideas? This will be my first winter raising chickens, 24-so far.

I decided to go ahead and put the waterer on concrete blocks so to see if have leaks. I hooked it up yesterday, and the chickens went right to it, they love it. I'm leaving the 5-gal. waterer in place to be sure today, then will take it out.
