Automatic coop doors.

I haven't used any auto doors... but recently read a thread where the guys pullet who didn't move out of the doorway as it was coming down was crushed and killed instantly. :hmm

Many of my young birds try roosting in the doorway early on.

I have the one from Fleming Outdoors. Very similar to the ChickenGuard with several more features. I have had it for 3 years & never had a problem with chickens getting caught. A few times I have had some get locked out. That happens rarely. Would not be without my auto coop door!

The guy in your story may have used the automatic door that uses an electric linear actuator, even tho some of them are small and slow they do exert some force (250lb and up) 1. The Chicken Guard brand uses a motor and a string to pull the door up and mostly gravity to close it down, so depending on how heavy the door is.

I have been thinking about buying a automatic coop door too. I want to build a coop for retired non egg laying hens and let them 100% free range.
There would be no fenced in run for them and auto door would at least offer night time protection for them.
My wife won't let me butcher retired non laying egg hens...
