Hi, I'm new here, but have perused through threads as a guest for some time. I have been trying to come up with a design to open the gate of our Chicken Run so the birds can go out and forage. We have found that if we let them out too early, they will start to lay eggs around the yard and not in the nesting boxes.
Here is what I came up with, and I am in it less than $30.
I bought a trunk door actuator from a junk yard ($5). The timer and 12 vdc transformer came from a local thrift store ($3). The majority of the cost went to the pieces of metal which I bought from lowe's. The spring is a screen door spring from Lowe's ($3). When the timer goes off it opens the actuator and the gate swings open, it has worked flawlessly so far and the birds are free each
day around 10:30. Great investment.
