Automatic Feeder vs. Manual Feeder

I use a auto feeder because my ducks free ranged around our 1/2acre pond and spent most of their time foraging so that way there was not a lot of wasted food. But I do give treats manually.

We introduced an automatic feeder with a trigger to discourage the starlings that were massing every day, pooping on everything. The day after the ducks finally figured it out (after two weeks of being deathly afraid of the new set up), the starlings caught on and started launching themselves at the trigger, flapping for dear life. My five ducks can only eat about 3 cups of food in a day, and I went through 8 cups when the starling masterminds cracked the system...

Now we just feed the ducks at night when they get locked in their house but they're starving by evening :(
