I’m confused. Lately I’ve been doing research on Black Copper Marans, trying to figure out if they’re autosex or not, but all I got is mixed results. Nothing I found stated whether they are or not. Your thoughts? 😁

Hi there. :frow

I bred FBCM for several years and there is not an auto sexing gene to them AT all , that I'm aware of.

You can breed the rooster over a barred hen and get black sex links... but not auto sexing Marans.

Would love to see the info you got indicating they were auto sexing though.. as this is the very first time I've ever heard that. :pop

ETA: But an FBCM will pass his egg color gene to his offspring so the hens will still dark eggs if bred to brown layer.

Marans are not an autosex breed, but since you brought it up, I don't see why you couldn't breed a Cuckoo Marans rooster over Black Marans and end up with a sexlink because the barring gene is sexlinked...I wonder...

I’ll see if I can find it.

Because to get the sex link... the DAME has to be the one to pass two copies of the barring gene to her sons. Using a barred rooster will not give sex links. :)

Crossing a barred hen with solid rooster will result in male offspring with one barring gene, you'll only get two copies if you bred a double barred rooster to a solid hen, or breed the barred male offspring back to the barred hen.
