avatar uploading question

grrr....I am so frustrated! why does the computer keep telling me that my image is too large to upload for my avatar picture? I just use a regular non fancy digital camera- never had any problems before. I dont know the numbers or anything...
I uploaded the picture somewhere else here- on my page or something...but cant get an avatar.
